Baby its cooooold outside!!!

bundleUp

Since this is my first post, I want to tackle something that most of us deal with one way or another. An issue that seems to arise during the coldest of weather something I call “Winter Skin”. Winter Skin is a common condition that occurs when the skin has been exposed to cold air. The skin gets abnormally dry and itchy when subjected to freezing temperatures and most of the skin care products that we use during the more mild seasons just don’t cut it. Here are few suggestions to combat Winter Skin.

Moisturizing is you friend

Try moisturizing twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) for best results. For extremely dry skin three times a day is optimal, so add a moisturizing session mid day to protect yourself.

L.O.C it in

Some might know the L.O.C method as a hair care treatment, but few know that it is also an awesome way to protect the skin. For those who have never heard of L.O.C, it stands for Liquid Oil Cream. Start with the most natural liquid on earth, Water. After you have washed your skin apply oil to skin. I suggest Coconut oil because it’s a powerful moisturizer that is beneficial to restoring dry or flaking skin. It also helps to strengthen skin tissue more deeply and eliminate dead skin cells while absorbing quickly into your skin. If you have extremely dry skin and may want an oil that’s a bit heavier I suggest using Olive Oil. As far as creams go I would suggest using Shea butter or a cream infused with Shea butter. There are no strict rules as to what type of cream or lotion to use, but I always say go with what ever has the fewest amounts of chemicals listed in the ingredients.

LocMethod

Layer up

Layering up is an important aspect of protecting your skin from the harsh weather. Bundling up and keeping yourself warm is one of the best ways to shield the largest organ in your body from elements that may other wise harm it. Multiple layers of clothing will work for the majority of the body and hat, gloves and a scarf will handle the rest. If possible avoid synthetic materials mainly because they breathe poorly and may pull moister from your skin. Instead go with more natural fabrics for your cold weather clothing. They tend to breathe better than synthetic fibers and naturally wick moisture away from the body. Materials like wool, cotton and cashmere are great options.
