Best of 2015 for Brown Beauties

By  |  0 Comments

Looking back on 2015, it was a year of women of color friendly makeup progress. Many brands have risen to the occasion by providing additional foundation colors, as well as more universally flattering colors in lipstick, blush, bronzers, and much more. The market has improved greatly, not only with high end retailers, but also in the drugstores. After careful, uhm “research” (wink wink), I’ve narrowed down the best products of 2015 for brown beauties from pricey to the more affordable range.

Best Lipstick: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lip ($6) Available Online Only – ColourPop, most noted for their unique eyeshadow formulas, YouTube beauty guru collaborations, and one of the best affordable liquid lipsticks on the market, have really taken the makeup world by storm. Since their debut, these liquid lipsticks have expanded to include a color range perfect for literally EVERY skin tone. There are now 43 full size lippies and two sets of minis (5 per set). The non transfer, super matte formula, requires exfoliation and moisturizing of the lips before application for the beat results.

Best Contour: Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit ($40) – This cream contour palette has all that you need for both highlighting and contouring to bring dimension to your face. You may have seen these palettes in your local Sephora, but were unable to find anything darker than Medium/Tan. That is because the Deep palette is sold exclusively on the ABH website. The range is beautiful and features 6 colors to fit most darker shades and undertones. The formula is not overly creamy, which allows for control during application, and is also very blendable.

Best Highlight: Ofra Cosmetics Eyeshadow/Highlight in Bliss ($15) – Ok, so Becca’s collab with YouTube beauty guru, Jaclyn Hill’s Champagne Pop is a huge success. But there’s a more affordable dupe which is just as universally flattering. Ofra Cosmetics recently debuted eyeshadows, which double as highlighters, in a variety of shimmery shades. Bliss, from that shade range, is highly comparable to Champagne Pop, at a fraction of the price. It comes in a single pan form, great for applying to a Z Palette. The color payoff isn’t as high, but it is very easily buildable, which is fantastic for highlighting because you wont go overboard.

white Sacha Cosmetics

Best Setting Powder: Sacha Cosmetics Loose Setting Powder ($20) – Now, the buttercup powder has been all of the rage for setting your highlighting concealer, but Sacha also offers this setting powder in skin tones ranging from pale to very dark. That means you can set your contour as well as the rest of your face! The undertones are designed for US, which means that you won’t get any flashback in photos and your makeup will blend in with the rest of your body.

Best Brow Products: NYX Cosmetics ($6-$10) – Whatever you prefer to slay your brows with, NYX has you covered. From the Micro Brow Pencil, to the Pomade, Brow Gel, and Brow Powder Duo, NYX has your brow needs at an affordable price. These products perform at a comparable rate to higher end products. Youtube beauty gurus, Destiny Godley and Jackie Aina, have raved about NYX products consistently on their channels. So before you drop $18-$22 on a high end brow product, consider hitting up your local drugstore for these NYX brow items.

Best Setting Spray: Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Free Makeup Setting Spray ($16-$30) – I know, it’s expensive, BUT IT WORKS! For all of my oily girls out there, THIS is the holy grail. Paired with a mattifying primer, not only is your makeup not budging, but your face will never get past dewey. For my dry ladies, check out the entire line from UD because everyone who has tried them, swears by them. Get yourself the 1 ounce version to try. You’ll become a believer.

Best Primers: Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer ($16-$36) – The entire range of MUFE primers feature top notch performance, making it a must have for your makeup application. Your beat just isn’t complete, without the right primers for your skin’s needs. Personally, my faves are the Caramel primer (for color correction) and the Mattifying primer (for oily skin). You can find 10 full size, and 3 travel size, primers to choose from for issues of dryness, texture, and uneven skin tone.

Best Foundation: Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation SPF15 ($39) – I slept on Tarte for the longest time when it came to foundation. I just never thought of their brand as WOC friendly. But after a trip to Ulta, in late summer 2015, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a loose powder foundation which matched my new darker skin tone. The cream formula is the one I am loving on for the year though. It is lightweight, blends like a dream, and features 6 shades for brown beauties, and a few more for my lighter skinned sisters. Their 24 color options feature warm and cool tones, so there’s something for almost everyone. Their darkest shade is at least two shades from my usual skin tone, so I feel that this is a line which many women can find a match under, which is hard to come by. Drop into your local Sephora or Ulta to get a sample. While you’re there, see about a sample of the powder version to set it with.

So there you have it, loves. My best of 2015 list for all of my brown beauties. I hope that you will find something to try. Let me know what your favorite makeup products were from last year. Also, tell me which products you’re looking forward to for 2016. You can comment here, or check me out on my YouTube channel where I talk about makeup three times per week! Happy New Year, loves.
