What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is a solid fatty oil that comes from the nut of the Karite Shea tree that grows wild in the savanna regions of West and Central Africa. There are two main colors you will find when it comes to this Shea Butter, one is an ivory color and the other a yellowish shade. If you have grade A quality it should not have a rancid smell but more of a gentle nutty aroma. I just mention grade quality it’s the term that is used to set the standard for commercial use of Shea Butter and is ranked from A to E.

  • Grade B – refined ( little to no smell)
  • Grade C – highly refined and extracted with solvents such as hexane
  • Grade D  lowest uncontaminated grade

Ivory vs Yellow Shea Butter

The difference between the ivory and yellow is that they are processed differently. The ivory butter comes directly from the nut and the yellow has add a root from the borututu tree is added in the milling process, and gives it that tumeric yellow color. I have been told by Africans that the yellow she butter has also palm oil added to it also but I don’t believe it effects the coloring in the butter. All in all they are pretty much processed the same way.

How can it be organic?

Here is a video I found on YouTube that best explains the process.
