There are so many recipes for you to try out there, some can do more harm than good. I am just going to address a few of them today with you guys focusing mostly on DIY for your face.  Your face is one of the most sensitive place on your body not to mention that it’s one of the first things people look at. That is why you must be careful with DIYs, the last thing you want to do is damage your skin.

Egg White Facial Mask

Egg whites masks are believed to have a firming effect to the skin.  That is true it does tighten the skin but it is only a temporary effect. People who have oily and acne prone skin would try this mask because it draws out the oil from your skin while it tightens your pores.  I know you guys are thinking these are all great things what is the problem?? Well the problem is that the eggs you are using could possibly have salmonella. Remember this is going on your face so if you accidently ingest some of it that will not be a pretty situation. If you don’t know the source of where your eggs comes from then I would advise against using them for this type of application.

Adding spices to your mask has great benefits for your skin for anti-inflammatory and anti-aging. I’m not suggesting for you not to use spices in some of your DIY facial masks but to only proceed with caution. Remember when I mention that your face is one of the most sensitive parts of your body, well if you add the wrong spice like cayenne pepper to your mask you may feel like your skin is on fire. In addition to the burning, it may accidentally go into your eye and that would not be pretty. A mask that contains the spice turmeric is one of the more popular ones to help with people who have inflammation of the skin. Keep in mind before you try adding a spice like turmeric in your mask, if you have a lighter skin tone it may cause you to experience an orange tinting of the skin. Turmeric will stain so I suggest try using the extract instead so you can still receive the great benefits this spice has to offer without the orange glow.

Toothpaste for Acne

I know that was guilty of this one, when I was a teen (and maybe into my 20’s) applying toothpaste to my pimples was a normal practice. At some point in time in our lives someone suggested this method to us to help “dry out” pimples with the expectation of having clearer skin in no time. I will admit that if you were in a pinch it did work, is it the smartest thing to do? No, because this is a product for your teeth and not your face. By using this method of acne treatment you can actually bigger breakouts because of the chemicals in your toothpaste. “Toothpaste contains certain ingredients — baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, menthol, essential oils, triclosan — that cause pimples to dry out,” says Dr. Neal Schultz.  So why not just apply a baking soda mask instead. It would be a more natural alternative.

So the next time you give yourself a DIY facial treatment think about all the ingredients that you will be using and make sure that they are safe to use on your face. If you are not sure how your skin will react always apply it to a small area first and wait a few minutes to see if you have a reaction. Just remember that your face can be very sensitive and the last thing you would want to do is cause an irritation that everyone can see. Now that you read my post you can go check out the DIY CORNER on our website and most of all have fun.
