Oil based moisturizers and water based moisturizers have great benefits for your skin respectfully, the hard part is to figure out which is right for you.  Adding a moisturizer to your skin care routine no matter what skin type you have is essential. Moisturizers not only treat and prevent dry skin but also helps improve skin tone and texture. With all the varying skin types out there, I thought it would be helpful to highlight some skin types and recommend whether water based or oil based moisturizers are right for you

Types of Skin

Normal Skin : This type of skin is neither to dry or too oily. To maintain a good balance on your skin I would recommend a water base moisturizer that’s light and non-greasy feeling.  These moisturizers would often contain some of light oils in your ingredients.

Dry Skin : To restore a good balance of moisture to the skin I would recommend an oil base moisturizer that contains ingredients like Argan Oil and Coconut Oil are a few examples of oils that would help hydrate the skin. Body Butters are a great option for dry skin because it is a heavier moisturizer and would provide a barrier for the skin and help prevent water from evaporate from the skin.

Oily Skin : This type of skin is prone to breakouts and acne. The misconception for this type of skin is that it does not need a moisturizer but that is false. The skin care products that you would use to remove the oils and dry out your skin you still need to add moisture back in. A light water base moisturizer would be your best option. I would make sure that it was labeled noncomedogenic. Another way of saying that it would clog your pores.

Sensitive Skin : This type of skin is susceptible to skin irritations, redness, itching or rashes. Try to find a moisturizer that has soothing ingredients like chamomile or aloe.  Avoid products that contain potential allergens, such as fragrances or dyes. Also, avoid products containing acids, which can irritate sensitive skin.

Mature Skin: When you age your skin tends to become dryer because your oil-producing glands are not as active as they use to be. An oil base moisturizer with antioxidants would be my recommendation to help hold in moisture and combat wrinkles.

Side note: Keep in mind that your skin type can change due to the environment, hormonal changes in the body and disease. Also your skin type may differ on various parts of your body and may require different moisturizing options.
