Relationship Resume

While updating my resume, and scanning the multiple job sites,  it dawned on me that this process ia a metaphor for love, dating and relationships in general.  So I began to think about my “Relationship Resume”

Each of us man or woman, is a brand, a corporation in our own right, and dating is nothing more than a job interview.  We all know, the more prestigious the job, the better the “benefits”, and the more the interviews you have to endure before an offer for employment. We can all agree that the process to get hired to make fries at Mickey D’s is vastly different than being the CEO.  So the first part of the process is to know what job you’re either looking for and/or hiring for.  Translation: If you want to be (OR HAVE) a sidepiece or a jumpoff, don’t go through the CEO application process.  You have to know what position you’re looking to fill in “YOUR” corporation except no more…. or less. This will require that you have a clear “job description” and more importantly clearer job “requirements” that you can share with potential candidates.

Next step in the process is to evaluate your own “resume” and qualifications.  What job are you suited for or able to perform (at this point in your career).  If a potential “employer is looking for a Master’s level candidate, and you barely have your emotional “GED”…. than that job…no matter how much you want it, no matter how much it would help, aint for you…yet.  You have work you need to do to get on that level.  Here is the kicker, once you have gone through the process of getting your emotional “Master’s or PhD” you would almost certainly never apply for a job that only required a GED.  *Some of you…Ladies in particular, are hiring GED level employees to fill PhD level jobs in “YOUR” corporation and mad at the performance.  Or even worse, you have your PhD and you’re applying for GED level positions in someone else’s corporation and wonder you’re dissatisfied with your job/role???

It seems to me that one of the problems is that many people think they have PhDs when they in fact have GED’s.  Evaluate your “resume” What are your qualifications, what do you bring to the table.  Why should you be hired over the other applicants?  A lot of you got your resumes that “look” great, you got the best paper, great font, spacing…all on point, but it don’t say ish.  Translation:  You got your hair and nails right, body tight,  and enough cleavage and curves to give the average man whiplash. You got pecs on deck, a sixpack,  the newest car with rims and designer wear etc. Don’t get me wrong, presentation is important…but that only gets the employer to read the resume…you got to have content to back it up.

Conversely, if you can only “afford” to pay a person with a GED, stop interviewing candidates with PhDs (I’m looking at my fellas primarily).  Know what you can and will offer in the way of benefits.  If you’re still a “Small Business” than don’t go after Corporate level employees, unless your clear about who you are and what you offer, Some “Corporate” types (Looking primarily at my ladies) don’t mind working with a “Small Business” and growing them  into a “Corporation”, just don’t forget who got you there, who was your principle investor, because part of your appeal is their impact on you (read between the lines..)

As an employer, you’re not off the hook, if you get caught in the presentation a resume and don’t review it thoroughly, and don’t have a firm grasp on the role you need filled, than it’s your fault for hiring and unqualified applicant. (Just Saying).  You also have to understand the current job market.  It may be unfair, but there are more Female Employers than there are qualified applicants.  So many times my ladies are hiring whoever applies rather than who is qualified, or accepting positions to which they are overqualified.  Some of you ladies are paying men for simply applying.  Think of it like this, if you could get a check for just applying to a job, wouldn’t it make sense that you could make a living simple applying to lots of jobs????? Some of the jobs will pay you a few times for multiple applications….(Just saying)  As a “corporation” it is difficult to contend with a company that will pay candidates simply for the applying, but just know that those companies seldom if ever fill the position and have nothing more than an endless stream of “applicants”, and almost always change their hiring practices (p.s I’m not talking about sex…alone….. Read between the lines).

To the consummate applicant, (mostly fellas) at some point you get too old for that life.  It may pay dividends but it’s like playing in the NFL, you make a lot of” money” in a very short span of time, but by your 30’s your done and if you haven’t worked on your “Resume” you’ll be broke, and unemployable, still trying to relive/ reminisce on the days you “Played” in the league (think the original LT)

Ultimately, once you have an established brand, you have graduated from a resume to a “Portfolio” your beyond filling jobs, and you should be looking for “Mergers” from other equally established “Corporations/Brands” ( Think J & B )  Otherwise it’s called an acquisition. (Think Oprah and ol’boy).
