Finding a good shampoo and conditioner combination that not only moisturizes, but also hydrates hair is not an easy feat. I’m usually wary of products that claim to be for “all types of hair” – but I still gave Soul Purpose Pure Essentials Hair Care Collection a try by using their Hydrating Shampoo and Moisturizing Conditioner.

Pure Essentials Hair Care CollectionMy hair 4b/4c hair type is naturally very light – a dirty blonde color – so it tends to need a lot of moisture. I usually give myself a hot oil treatment or do some prep work before really cleansing my hair, but I wanted to give an untainted review of these products, so I followed their directions.

First using the shampoo the smell of the product was like tropical candy and reminded me of my teenybopper days. Fortunately, the smell was not overwhelming. I wet my hair and started to massage it into my scalp and my hair started to feel rubbery and grainy. After I finished thoroughly washing the shampoo out, I added the conditioner which made it even worse! My hair got even more rubbery and as I let it dry, my hair began to feel super brittle, like it could be broken off in chunks!

I hurriedly got another conditioning product and after a thoroughly rewashing my hair, it went back to its normal state. I was so relieved!

Instead of adding moisture, I felt that these products took all of my natural moisture out. The shampoo and conditioner labels claim to use argan oil, coconut oil, silk amino acids and fruit extracts. From reading the label, I determined these ingredients are indeed in the shampoo and conditioner, but they are derived from synthetic means rather than directly from the plants which may have altered their moisturizing capabilities. Also the combination of the chemical ingredient within the products may have contributed to the dryness I experienced as well.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product for 4b/4c hair.
