The Power to Choose

Youdecide

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage – pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically – to say ‘no’ to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside. The enemy of the ‘best’ is often the ‘good.’
~Stephen Covey

Everything in life that will ultimately benefit us, first takes us making a choice. As a matter of fact, this morning I had to make a painful choice. I could either lie in the bed or get my butt up and go downstairs to get on my treadmill. I have NEVER been one that enjoys working out so this choice is never an easy one for me to make. Because I really NEVER feel like working out!!!! However as the singer Shakira says, “these hips don’t lie” so if I want to stay the size I am today, I MUST work out. But in all seriousness just like everything else in life, if we are ever to produce anything worth having, we must exercise the power to choose the action and mindset we need to stay committed toward making it happen.
A great example of this is Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry rose from being homeless to producing his own plays and now TV shows, movies AND ultimately he now owns his own studio. However did you know it took him from 1992 until 1998 to even get his first play to take off? It was 6 long years of commitment and perseverance in the face of uncertainty that Tyler had to endure before he even began to make it. Matter of fact, I read an article a few years ago in O magazine where Tyler shared that he saved $12,000 to put on his play in 1992, only to have it fail miserably. He then worked hard and attempted to produce his play two more times, so pretty much he failed a total of three times over the course of six years before it took off in 1998. All of this while Tyler was homeless and living in a car. Here is what I want you to get from Tyler Perry’s story, when you have a spark inside of you that that says I want this thing, you must do ALL that it takes to go after it. You have to truly exercise the discipline to not give up in the midst of adversity just like Tyler Perry did and to do that is truly a choice you have to make overt and over.
So how can you exercise the power to choose? Good choices are based on what’s real for you, not emotion. It all starts with making good decisions and here are the ingredients you need to to that;

FIRST – Weigh out all your options. You must first stop and think about the positive and negative aspects of the two variables you are deciding between. Here’s an example – to buy or not to buy that new pair of boots. What are the benefits to buying the boots and what are the drawbacks?

SECOND – Gather all of the information. In order to make the absolute best decision you need to look at all the information at hand. For me, if those boots are not in my budget and I buy them, it would mean another bill will not get paid which in the long haul will mess up my credit. So I begin to ask myself, “Do I really need these boots?” and as I do, I realize that this is an emotional purchase and I can then walk away from potentially making a choice that is not good for me. That indeed is gathering information but depending on the situation it can indeed be much more complex than that. However all it really takes with any choice is those 2 steps.
So let’s get take power over our choices by learning what is best for us in the long run and then exerting the power to choose only that which will move us toward all that we want!
