CROCHET BRAIDS

We’re Hair® is pleased to feature trendy and fun styles that embody the diversity of hair styling options for natural hair that are available at your finger tips.

This week’s style to look out for is the ever versatile and completely natural hair friendly Crochet Braid style! This is a definite favorite of mine especially.

Crochet braids are a low-cost and low-maintenance way to change a hairstyle in a snap! As the name suggests crochet braids are portions of hair extensions crocheted into cornrows using a latch hook crochet tool. Check out this video from one of our favorite Youtubers “The Chic Naturalhere !

BENEFITS

People who have a sensitive scalp or who want to give their scalp a rest from more intense hairstyles may consider crochet braids. Crochet braids tend to put less strain and stress on the hair follicles. Generally the damage can be caused by the pulling that occurs when the hair is pulled into a braid or twist and then slightly weighed down with the synthetic hair.

Crochet braids can typically be used to add a splash of color to natural hair. They can be woven in to cover natural hair,  or to add length and fullness as desired.

Crochet braids are a popular choice not only because they can help create a quick, fashionable hairstyle, but also because they’re a long lasting style option. Once the braids are woven in, daily hair-care and maintenance . These types of braids don’t require hair glue, or netting base or many of the other things that extension styles sometimes require.

COST

These types of braids also don’t cost a lot of money compared to many other extension options. It can be very easy to keep cost down when opting for crochet braids especially if you plan to D-I-Y because so little is needed to achieve this style. Here are a list of the supplies needed:

1 crochet latch hook (typically found at most craft stores)

4-6 packages of your choice of synthetic hair extension braiding hair

Hair Moisturizer and or leave in conditioner (your desired brand)

Depending on how you decide to style your crochet braids you may also need perm rods, or flexi-rods.

With the perm rod or flexi rod option, after crocheting the extension hair into the cornrows you will roll the hair onto the rod and dip the rod in boiling hot water. This is a step that you will need to be very cautious while doing.

If the D-I-Y option is not for you then you can employ a hair care professional to create this look for you. Although the exact cost varies among profession stylist the range is about $80-$150. This is also generally in addition to the cost of the hair extension that you provide the stylist.

The variety of textures of extensions that you can use for crochet braids are endless; one of my personal favorite brands are Janet Collection Noir Marley braid hair. This brand allows for some heat styling as well as a natural afro look when worn loosely. Other popular textured brands that are used are:

Water Wave hair

Kanekalon bulk hair

Tantalizing twist braid (pre-twisted synthetic hair)

MAINTENANCE

While crochet braids provide the look and feel of a full weave style they also provide easy scalp accessibility to keep up with your moisturizing regimen and scalp cleansing needs. It tends to get a bit time consuming and frustrating trying to keep your hair moist with a regular full or partial weave installed.

I find that its easiest for me to moisturize my scalp without soaking the synthetic hair extension with oil by combining my favorite moisturizer/hair oil and leave in conditioner into a squeeze bottle with a narrow tip and applying it daily as part of my beauty regimen. Tangling and matting can occur if hair product is applied directly to synthetic hair.

Along with maintaining moisture you may need to trim the hair regularly as synthetic hair is prone to tangle even when properly maintained. Just having a quick once over  your hair style to snip tangled ends and matted sections will also help in maintaining the look and keep it neat.

Overnight maintenance is fairly simple as well depending on the length and thickness of your chosen look a loose “pineapple” (loosely gathered high ponytail) wrapped with a satin scarf may be the best fit. I would also recombine using a large satin lined bonnet for overnight protection and moisture maintenance.
