Why Are You Here?
My question to you is why are you here? What is it that you was put here to do? What is your purpose, your passion? Or, you might be asking, “have I found my calling.” This is a question I asked myself years ago. You see I had graduated from college with a degree in Television & Film and right at graduation I landed my dream job at BET. Soon after, I began to work on one of the hottest television shows of the 90’s, the Martin show. I was being invited to all of the hot Hollywood parties where I bumped elbows with all the biggest stars. Hollywood became my life. My life-long dream had been realized! However, for some reason I was unhappy. Somehow, I did not feel fulfilled. I was confused by these feelings because I had attained a career I had fantasized about for as long as I could remember. I was doing something that some could only dream of and yet somehow I did not feel like this was the right place for me.
In the midst of these feelings, my friend Keisha invited me to volunteer with her at a youth program at our church. There I was in a room full of 300 teenagers, all who seemed to be in the same place of hope and opportunity I had been just 10 years prior. That moment for me was a defining moment; I realized then that the decision to go to college had changed MY life, and that I had the power to use my personal experience to help others make life changing decisions. You see, like many of the teens in the room that night, I am from a neighborhood that could have easily defined my life in a negative direction. However, instead of being defined by what my neighborhood’s choice for me would have been, I decided to be defined by my own choice. So there I was, standing in a room full of teenagers years after I had made that powerful life defining choice, and I wanted to make sure that they too would have the same opportunity to live out their dream as I did. However at the same time, I was going through an internal struggle. Remember, I did not like my dream at the moment. So as difficult of a place as I was in, I knew that the opportunity given to me was not afforded to so many teenagers who often get caught up.
When I got home from the program, I began to ponder on how I got to a place where I could define for myself who I wanted to be. I began to ask myself, “What made the difference for me? How did I make it?” And a light bulb went off inside of me. Reminiscing on the ingredients that helped me “make it” ignited my passion to give back, and on September 19, 1993, I committed myself to answering the urgent call to create a program that would change the lives of young women across America. This urgent call lit a spark inside me I had never felt before. That night, not only did I create a new program for African American teenage girls called Imani Phi Christ but I also found my passion and my purpose. I realized that in this light bulb moment, I really also began to answer in internal question I had been asking myself Why Am I Here. It was when I started working with young women that I began to feel alive. I started to feel the fulfillment I never felt from any Hollywood party or gig. So while I loved producing and creating, which is what led me to television & film in the first place, I had found a new avenue that allowed me to produce and create, while at the same time feeling excited, passionate and alive. I had found my purpose!
My question to you is why are you here? Have you found your passion, do you live in your purpose and love what you do? I would even venture to ask, have you found fulfillment in your career? Defining your purpose is really about knowing what you want, truly knowing what your gifts and talents are and creating a life using your gift.
