Happy V-Day Everyone!

African-American-Couple-Kissing

Notice I said V-day; you interpret that for yourself, that “V” stands for whatever you want it to stand for.  Here are 5  possible things that phrase could be saying in case it helps your imagination:

1)Happy “Venus” day;    2) Happy “Vampire” day;   3) Happy “Ventriliquist” day;   4) Happy “Vagisil” day;   5) Happy “Viagra” day; & the list goes on…

For those that entertain “Happy Valentine’s Day”, in the words of Jehovah reincarnate i.e. Jay-Z “ I cant knock ya hustle.”  My personal stance on it isn’t really that important but since this is a blog and I think that maybe the idea of a blog is to share views and information, below are my thoughts.   I’ve summarized my feelings about “Happy Vomit’tines Day” by providing a picture, which is worth a thousand words,  a 3 point overview of my conclusions about “V-Day” via my bittersweet feelings about mostly all holidays birthed by our great “western” mother and 8 V-day questions to myself, which I will answer.  I hope this is at least thought provoking.

(A simple and immature depiction of my thoughts on the V!)

Rotten Tomatoes logo1. Rotten Seeds: I believe when one looks at the history of a good amount of the holidays we celebrate here in America or “The West”, there tends to be a diabolical thread associated with the making, makers and profiteers of almost all American holidays.  I personally believe that in essence these sketchy alternative histories that I hear about western holidays are true but to be honest, I also have to say that some of these histories may be partly myth, so in order to not believe in “BigFoot” I try to be careful about what I regurgitate as “the word of God.”  All in all, I feel like rotten seeds, create rotten trees, from which the fruit doesn’t fall far.  #BOOMThe_Valentines_Grinch_by_Suntro

2. Double Edge Sword: Many will agree on the sketchy histories of these holidays but then there is also a good side to these holidays.  which creates a grey area, and so of-course then the arguments come; and straight from the mouth of the devils advocates, into your mind enters; “the moral dilemma”.  Here are a few examples of the arguments that will make you look like or at least make you feel like your some combination of Scrooge and the Grinch for even questioning said western holidays.  X-mas: What could possibly be wrong with a day that is dedicated to exchanging tokens of affection with loved ones in the name of the Lord? B. Thx-Giving: What could possibly be wrong with a day to break bread, spend time with family and be thankful? C.  Valentines Day!: What could possibly be wrong with a day to celebrate love, show love, and cherish those for whom you have affection? D. THE ANSWER TO ALL 3……THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THOSE CONCEPTS.  I dare you to say there is something wrong with that without being the quintessential Grinch.

eb1de-santaiwantyouEspecially to someone that is either unaware of, or strongly detests the idea that the puritan concepts they align with inside these holidays could possibly have been half-truths hi-jacked by a machine that could really care less about  loved ones and humanity as long as; said stocks;  are guaranteed to produce said billions of dollars; which said profiteer’s; can then deposit into said Swiss bank accounts.

HOVAAll in all, “I get it!”, no-one dies when you buy a loved one a gift (except maybe a child-worker in  3rd world sweatshop) and I agree there typically are, if not always are, beautiful human concepts and notions at the heart of most of these western holidays. Even the ones that are dedicated to inhumane/money driven wars.  So then the moral dilemma brings us to the question of; how can a holiday be bad? if it produces good?  When you find the answer; “Holla at me”  or next time you run into Jay-hovah, please ask him for the divine reasoning. While you’re at it ask him what day he was really born so we can settle this birth of Christ/true Christmas day controversy once and for all.

3. What the heart do?:
Though definitely fueling a larger capitalist machine; it is hard, if not impossible to argue that these holidays have substance.   I would say from my own personal experience that; in varying degrees; people actually do embody the good principles that are used to define said holidays, i.e. Holy-Days.  In that light, to me, that does make them indeed Holy, according to the integrity of the practitioner.  To me the authenticity belongs to the individual; not the holiday itself. And how one embodies the principals of love, affection, unity and Godliness as advertised is what validates the holiday for me.  For  that reason I try not to debate about the authenticity of certain holidays, just the authenticity of its application.  fam loveSome people I know authentically love giving, and the quality time that they spend with family  and friends during Holy-days; to me that is just beautiful.  Others only seem to be concerned with what objects or attention they can receive during holidays, and that’s beautiful too (as long as its kept “The hell away from me”, “that’s not how I roll”).  I think “Great-Mother West” has a slick way of seducing “most” of us into contradicting the morals that we found ourselves on.  So sadly I think most of us allow capitalist tendencies to contaminate our higher principles while we are in the fog of her bosom.  So to those who eat from her table without questioning the integrity of themselves and the meals she prepares I say: “Check yourself, before you wreck yourself” and make sure your holiness, isn’t just full of holes.

Eight V-Day Questions I am going to ask myself and answer for your convenience; hopefully this clarifies my thoughts on “Happy Venereal Day.”

1. Do I celebrate V-day? ABSOLUTELY NOT! In theory.

2. Do I celebrate love on the same calendar day as V-day? YES, depending on my relationship status on V-day and if there is special lady in my life.  Unless she has a revolutionary spirit like myself and in that case, will gladly say “F’ this corny day and follow my usual gift pattern which is show love when you feel it; give gifts as souvenirs when you come back from traveling and otherwise; give gifts as random acts of affection, they are more authentic that way, and more indicative of sincerity in my opinion.  If she celebrates V-Day it is not a big deal for me to meet her halfway and embrace what doesn’t conflict with my value system.  Love is worth more than trivial things; V-day never killed anyone right? (Ironically, if I am correct, the original Saint V-Day accounts do involve killing[s]).

3. Will I buy a gift or do something special on V-Day? Yes, but not in the name of V-day,  I usually do something because love is “in the air” and at a time when other people get to “feel special” I will also make sure that the *hypothetical black female, knows that she is special “also too”.  I’ve recently entertained the idea of “Black Love Day”, instead of what some would call pledging allegiance to St. Valentine.

4. Does my act of participating in V-Day violate my concept of Holy-days? Not exactly, because it is about the person I am appreciating and not based in how much money I spend, what I spend is not even relevant, I usually do whatever I think the person deserves and am aware of the spirit in which I spend money.  Intentions matter, and my mind and heart, I do not align with the nature that western holidays are practiced, so I don’t feel at conflict with self.  Also I try to avoid consumerism as much as possible, creativity shows appreciation so much more and also goes so much farther than money, so I try to let creativity dominate over expense when it comes to gift giving.  Spending money can make things memorable too, but in my eyes; creativity makes gifts unforgettable.

5. Is participating bittersweet? YES, there is no getting around that. Period.consumerism

7. Does this support Capitalism? Yes, it supports Capitalism (this is 1/2 of the bitter in the sweet) although I abstain as much as possible, because again “It ain’t about material objects”

7. What am I doing this V-Day?  Spending time with my eternal valentine, the lady of my life, my daughter.  And that my friends is sweeter than a box of chocolates.  Although she will most likely be trying to pry me away from my work most of the day and it will also be snowing again in Boston.  That and the breakfast her wonderful mother and I will have that morning, in my eyes, is something money can’t buy.
