When it comes to natural hair care, I’m not what you would call a purist. I am unafraid of venturing off into the “meant for all hair types” world or the hair care lines that do not market towards natural hair. Since going natural, I’ve avoided brands like Pantene, VO5, Suave, and the like, despite their attempts to jump on the natural hair bandwagon for sales purposes. Anything with sulfates, alcohol, or other harsh elements that would undoubtedly dry out my hair, I’m not here for. But I was given the new TRESemme Perfectly [UN]done shampoo and conditioner to review, so I did. Their website says of the new line:

Achieve the beautiful wavy styles you love. The new TRESemmé PERFECTLY (UN)DONE collection with Sea Kelp extract, infuses hair with texture for natural looking waves for an all over gorgeously (un)Done wavy look. The lightweight silicone-free shampoo and conditioner prepare your hair for flowing body and texture without weighing it down, while the sea kelp extract penetrates the hair to create natural looking waves in each strand for an all-over gorgeous wavy look.

Now, clearly, I was giving TRESemme the side-eye from the description alone. I chose to go in with the full understanding that I may have to do some damage control once it was all said and [UN]done. And of course, TRESemme did not let me down. This shampoos and conditioner most certainly did [UN] do all of the hard work I have endured to keep my hair moisturized. After the shampoo, my hair felt brittle and sounded like straw between my fingers. Hoping to save my hair with a deep conditioning, I combed the conditioner through my hair and sat under the dryer for 30 minutes. Once I rinsed my hair out, it felt no better than before. Despite my hair being wet, it felt dry!

After reading the ingredients to confirm my suspicions, I saw that among the first ingredients in the shampoo was…SULFATES. And alcohol was among one of the first ingredients in the conditioner. This line is NOT for naturals. It is for women with wavy Eurocentric hair at best. I suspect it is designed to give women with straight hair an easier time styling a wavy look. So I returned to my mainstays and kept it moving. I do not recommend this line for naturals or curly girls of any type.
