Considering the cut… Natural Hair

By  |  0 Comments

So I have been quietly contemplating having my hair cut. I’m not talking about another big chop or anything ..nothing that drastic but I thing that its about time I pay closer attention to the shape of my hair.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spend the good part of 3 years growing and nurturing through trial and error and self assessing your trim needs and then “snip snip” D-I-Y style! For those of you who can relate, this is a process. Whether you just snip the split ends you see as you go, or you go the blow out, length check route, trimming is a necessary part of the process.

Trimming vs. Cutting

I personally just do a regular trim every four to six weeks after a series of co-washes and protective styles to keep things in order. Regardless of your chosen method to maintain hair length retention, you may be considering procuring a more professionally styled cut. I have a feeling that all these years of self maintenance is going to cost me a few inches. You know that feeling you used to get while anxiously sitting in the stylist chair after requesting a trim? You know you needed one but you want to keep those sheers in your sights as much as possible because you weren’t sure both of your meanings of a “trim” were the same? I have surely been there! Regardless of the mental trauma that we believe was sustained  by the anxiety most of these trims were necessary and justified even if we didn’t always agree.

Trimming is necessary to maintain hair health from everyday styling manipulation and environmental exposure. Split ends prevent optimal moisture and. Split-ends cannot be mended by products or repaired after they split. Many products claim to repair the damage but this is simply not true. The only way to repair split ends is to cut them off. Split ends make it difficult for hair to retain moisture, a consistent moisturizing regiment is necessary to prevent breakage and split ends.

The CUT

So many options to choose from. Many of our favorite naturals have undergone trendy new cuts and they might have you thinking of changing up your look a bit for the spring!

FullSizeRender-3

This look seems to be one of the more popular cuts lately. Tapered with all the fullness and length in the front. This shape does take some maintenance especially if your hair tends to grow rapidly. An easy wash and go can be achieved very easily with the look as well.

inverted triangle hair-3

We love this look as well! It’s a great face-framing cut with a layers that are shorter in the back and lengthier and fuller and that top and around the face. I like to call this the strawberry cut.

wild child hair-3

Love this look, I like to call this the “wild child”. This very similar to the first tapered cut featured but grown out a lot more. It’s  worn very wild  and free here but does require some structural shaping. Adele rocks it amazingly, check out her styling skills on Instragram @adelesupreme.

This inverted bob style done on natural hair on @knottinikki  is definitely a favorite. Longer layers on top and tapered down in the back to form a face-framing bob shape.

hightop

The classic 90’s high-top is a great cut options as well! Pictured here accompanied with a sleek hard part for a bit more edge. This is another cut that featured a fuller top with all the sides given a taper fade. This cut is very edgy and fun but does require the pretty frequent maintenance visit with your favorite barber.

For a more drastic change I love Lupita’s short parted fro. This is a real statement style, although depending on the speed of growth it does require a regular maintenance cut but at the same time very low styling time.

I know for myself considering my fitness routine and the frequency in which I need to wash and restyle my hair I would prefer to choose a style that would be great for wash and go but still give me a good twist out. I also consider the fact that when my life tends to get really busy and that my schedule will prevent me from being as hands on with my hair so I chose a good protective style, I would also think about a cut that would still easily allow for my d-i-y, go-to protective styles. Whatever cut you decide to go with be sure your seek out the right pro to achieve your ideal look. Getting a consultation to find out what cut would best fit your taste and look is also often very helpful.
