Helping Your Little One With Self Confidence

In a day when media is so prevalent in our lives, it becomes even more important that we start teaching important things to our little ones early. It’s not always easy when they are being presented with weird stereotypes. And I’m not just talking about girls here. Boys are also presented with their own set of rules. So it becomes important that we as parents start teaching them at home, that it’s okay for them to be who they are.

  1. Let them make small choices. It’s very easy for us to pick out everything that they do, eat and wear, but that doesn’t teach them much about independence. Our days would go by faster if we picked out everything, but they might be happier if they got to make some choices. Letting them decide on what to wear, or have input in what’s for supper helps them to feel included. It also helps you to relax about having all their clothing match. Boys can wear pink, and girls can wear blue. Let them express themselves through clothing.

  1. Lead by example. This one is difficult for most of us. If we love and show confidence in ourselves then they know that it’s okay to be confident in themselves and love who they are. Don’t reinforce gender stereotypes on them. Don’t tell them that girls can only do this, and boys can only do that (unless it’s referring to giving birth, then, okay boys can’t do that). Boys can play with dolls, and in fact studies have shown they learn to be nurturing when they are allowed to do so. Girls can play with Hot Wheels, because they never are less of a girl if they like cars.

  1. Reinforce their behavior. All of their art is beautiful. All of their clothing choices are wonderful. The decisions that they make are smart, or careless but never stupid. Explain to them what happened if something didn’t go their way. Which leads to 4 actually.

  1. Talk to them. Too often we talk at our children and not to them. Yes they don’t do things right, and they need to know that when it happens. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t sit them down and explain to them what is going on. Sure it’s harder when they are one than when they are three, and their understanding isn’t the same as an adult’s would be. That doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the same considerations. If you, as their parent is willing to explain things to them, then they will start to expect that in all aspects of life. This is extremely important as they go to school. Your child will demand to be heard, and want to understand everything.

  1. Use strong role models. This means other than yourself. It’s true that the most important role model for any child is their parents, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t expose them to positive media role models. This will show them the difference between good and bad media. You can’t remove everything icky, but you can show them the right direction.

The most important thing for you to remember is that you are the parent, and therefore you get to decide how you want your child to think. At least about themselves. You can help them when they are young to become strong within themselves, and let them know how smart and wonderful they are.
